NCAA disciplines two Mississippi State athletes over sports betting
Two Mississippi State student-athletes were found to have breached NCAA sports betting rules after placing wagers on professional events through prediction market Kalshi.
US.- The NCAA has disciplined two Mississippi State athletes for violating its sports betting rules after an investigation found that both had placed wagers on professional sports events. The athletes, whose names have not been disclosed, allegedly violated NCAA bylaw 10.3, which prohibits athletes, staff members and conference employees from betting on sports.
The first case was reported to the university on February 8, 2026, by ProhiBet, an NCAA partner that helps identify potential violations. The athlete had placed a $50 bet on the Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots through prediction market platform Kalshi.
The player admitted to the bet during a meeting with Mississippi State’s compliance staff on February 17 and said it was the only sports bet he had ever placed. He received additional rules education as his only penalty.
The second Mississippi State athlete was flagged by ProhiBet on February 15 after placing wagers on the NBA All-Star Game, also through Kalshi. He met with the university’s compliance staff two days later and admitted to making two $10 bets.
Because the wagers won, the athlete was required to pay $66.47 to a charity and complete additional rules education. Both cases were classified as Level III violations, which are considered minor under the NCAA’s enforcement system.
