Mississippi lottery could sell tickets this year
After months of discussions, the state lottery is expected to debut during the final half of 2019.
US.- A board member for the Mississippi Lottery Corporation revealed this week that the new state lottery could start selling tickets sometime during the second half of the current year. The lottery was approved in August 2018 and will be exempt from sales taxes.
The Mississippi House of Representatives finally passed a bill back in August 2018 in order to create a state lottery. After facing major opposition – mainly from churches – the bill made it through the Legislature. The bill was finally sent to Governor Phil Bryant to be signed into Law.
Gerard Gilbert told The Associated Press that the board has hired in recent months the Balch & Bingham law firm. He also said that the process of choosing banking services and hiring a president to run day-to-day business will start soon.
Gilbert added that the Mississippi Lottery will have to apply to be part of multistage games that offer big prizes. These games include Powerball, and he hopes that the process can be done by early 2020.
