Mississippi legalises sports betting
Casinos in the state will be able to start offering sports betting operations on July 21st.
US.- The Mississippi Gambling Commission approved on Thursday a series of regulations that allow casinos in the state to offer sports betting. Mississippi is now the fourth state in the country to legalise sports betting.
The Magnolia State joins Delaware and New Jersey as the first states to legalise sports betting after the US Supreme Court ruled that the federal ban was unconstitutional. Nevada was the only state that was allowed to offer full-scale sports betting services before the resolution.
Residents and fans in Mississippi will be able to place bets on sports events from more than 25 casinos in Mississippi on July 21st. Some sports betting service providers must be licensed before the commission before they can start their operations. Commission Executive Director Allen Godfrey said before the vote that service providers were already applying for licences. Moreover, equipment must also be tested and approved by the state.
Casinos have to pay state and local taxes worth more 12 per cent of the bets minus the payouts, the regulation establishes. Casinos could accept bets on any pro or college event, except political elections.
