Melco and Hard Rock give up Spain project
After signing the biggest deal in Europe to be in charge of a casino in Cyprus, the consortium gave up on a project in Spain.
Spain.- Melco International Development and Hard Rock International, the operators behind the upcoming Cyprus casino, confirmed that they will not continue to pursue a Spanish casino resort project.
Yesterday marked the day that the joint venture of the two companies signed the contract to be the operators of what is going to become Europe’s biggest casino project located in Cyprus. During the ceremony that took place in Nicosia, the Commerce and Tourism Minister Lakkotrypis said that the consortium is set to improve incoming tourism.
No such luck for Spain though, since Melco and Hard Rock have withdrawn the intention to be the operator of the Center for Recreation and Tourism (CRT) project in Catalunya. The decision comes right before the June 30 deadline to present the final offers in order to obtain licenses. The BCN World project has now only one company waiting for the necessary permissions: a venture of Genting and Grup Peralada.
Melco has reportedly said that its attention is purely on Cyprus and the Asian market, whilst Hard Rock is about to invest in Canada and the United States, like the former Trump Taj Mahal. The government of Spain is set to take up to two months to come up with a decision of whether the project is still on track or not, even if there’s still a contender waiting.
