Maryland sports betting handle falls to $340m in February

Sports betting contributed $2.8m in tax revenue, according to data from the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency.

US.- Maryland’s sports betting handle was just under $340m in February, down from January’s $441.5m. According to data from the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA), sports betting contributed $2.8m in tax revenue.  

Maryland has ten retail and eight mobile sportsbooks. Online bets accounted for 95.6 per cent of all bets ($325m), including over $15.8m in free promotional play.

FanDuel continued to be the top operator in the state, generating a $157.7m handle, slightly down from $208.9m in January. DraftKings recorded $100.4m and BetMGM $33.1m. As for retail sports betting, MGM National Harbor had a $5.6m handle, Maryland Live! Casino $3.4m and Horseshoe Casino $2.2m.

Maryland’s sports wagering market launched in December 2021, with the mobile sports betting market opening on November 22 2022. Long Shot’s/Betfred Sportsbook commenced operations on February 9, 2023, becoming the state’s eighth mobile sportsbook.

MGM National Harbor was top performing US casino outside Nevada in 2022

Maryland’s MGM National Harbor was the top performing commercial casino outside of Nevada in 2022. The American Gaming Association (AGA) reports that it grossed $884.46m in revenue from slots and table games – 15 per cent more than in 2021.

One of Maryland’s six casinos, MGM National Harbor accounted for 43.12 per cent of the state’s casino gaming revenue last year. Retail sports betting at National Harbor, which launched in December 2021, brought in $11m.
