Maine bill proposes ban on online sweepstakes casinos

US.- Maine lawmakers have introduced a bill that proposes a ban on online sweepstakes casinos. , Legislative Document 2007 (LD2007), submitted by the Department of Public Safety via sponsor Sen. Craig Hickman, has been referred to the Veterans and Legal Affairs Committee.
The proposal targets dual currency models. It defines an online sweepstakes game as any game, contest, or promotion offered online that uses a dual‑currency payment system to simulate casino gaming, lottery, bingo, or sports betting.
Violations would carry penalties ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 per offence, which would go to the state’s gaming regulator for proceeds to be directed to the Gambling Addiction Prevention and Treatment Fund. This would apply to both operators and promoters.
Montana was the first stare to explicitly ban online sweepstakes with a law that entered into effect in October. California governor Gavin Newsom recently signed AB 831 into law, introducing a ban from January 1.
