Macau reaches 10-month winning streak
New data released today shows that casino revenue in Macau jumped 24 percent in May.
Macau.- Casinos from Macau achieved a 24 percent increase in revenues during May, and surpassed the expectations of 15-20 percent. This number marks a 10 consecutive month winning streak.
The gambling facilities from the only in place in China where gaming is legal experienced US$2.83 billion in revenue, as the government data showed earlier today. Reuters confirmed that the growth rate was the fastest recorded since February 2014 and the second highest result ever since this year started. Even if other markets in Asia are growing exponentially, Macau is still 9 times bigger than the Philippines, as the news outlet said.
As Macau gaming and financial authorities are celebrating a new rise on casino revenues, a problem gambling study was released, exposing a high growth of the issue. A new study revealed that the amount of declared problem gamblers in the casino city grew from 900 in 2011 to 14,000 last year. Furthermore, the local press revealed that among those 14,000 residents, around 30 percent is allegedly casinos and gaming companies’ employees.
The problem gambling report was commissioned to the University of Macau and released by the Social Welfare Bureau to local broadcaster TDM. The study was based on last year’s casino activities. The Chinese region of Macau is one of the largest casino hubs at international level.
