Kenya suspends all gambling ads for 30 days
Operators will need to submit all future ads for review.
Kenya.- Just days after the Kenya Communications Authority ordered media operators to reduce gambling advertising, the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) has announced an immediate 30-day suspension of all gambling advertisements in Kenya.
The suspension applies to betting, gaming, lottery competitions, and related promotions and across all forms of advertising, including television and radio broadcasts, social media, print media, outdoor ads, SMS, email promotions and endorsements by celebrities or influencers.
BCLB chairperson Jane Mwikali Makau highlighted growing concerns over the promotion of gambling in the country. Makau noted that certain promoters had been representing gambling as a viable investment option or a quick route to wealth. She added: “What is particularly alarming is the frequent broadcasting of gambling advertisements during the watershed hours, between 5.00am and 10.00pm. This practice exposes vulnerable groups, including minors, to gambling-related addiction.”
Under the Betting, Lotteries, and Gaming Act (Chapter 131 of the Laws of Kenya), the BCLB has issued a formal directive requiring the immediate halt of all gambling advertisements and endorsements for 30 days. During this suspension period, operators are mandated to submit all gambling advertisements to the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB) for review, classification and approval.
The Association of Gaming Operators, which represents betting firms, recently acknowledged public concerns and implemented age-verification systems and 24/7 toll-free helplines for confidential support. It has also launched national campaigns to promote responsible gaming practices.
Meanwhile, the Kenya Revenue Authority has warned gambling operators to renew their licences before June 30. It says operators with pending payments will be blocked.
