Italian gambling regulator revokes Multigioco permit
The operator’s licence has been revoked by the ADM.
Italy.- The Italian monopolies agency Agenzia delle dogane e dei Monopoli (ADM) has revoked the gambling licence of Multigioco SRL. The operator had been served with an order at the start of the month giving it 20 days to pay outstanding taxes, plus penalties and interest.
The ADM said that deadline has passed with no response from the company. As such Multigioco’s licence has now been revoked. The regulator said it had also received complaints from players about unpaid balances.
The ADM said that due to “repeated breaches of its contractual obligations”, Multigioco had “profoundly undermined the relationship of trust existing with the Administration” It said the operator had shown repeat non-compliance with tax and concession fees, concession extension costs and payment to Italy’s Sport Rescue Fund. It suggested that criminal proceedings could follow.
While Elys supported the launch of Multigioco’s site in 2023, the operator was sold to an undisclosed buyer last year. Meanwhile, Elys has been focusing on the US market with the Ugly Mug sportsbook in Washington DC.
New Italian gambling concessions
At the end of July, the ADM extended its approval process for Italy’s new online gambling concessions. It now intends to complete approvals by November 12 2025 rather than September 17.
It said the extension was due to the tender’s procedural intricacies, including the volume of documentation and vetting under the revamped regulatory framework. The extra time will allow staff to conduct full checks on applicants.
The ADM received 52 licence applications from 46 companies. That compares to 81 licences granted in 2018. That said, licensing has already generated €365m in revenue, exceeding expectation of €300–350m.
By November 12, concessionaires must pay the first tranche of the €7m licence fee, obtain approval from the ADM on gaming account tracking systems and publish their new .it certified domain. Successful bidders must finalise documentation within 35 days of receiving their concession and activate their platforms within six months.
