Iowa Lottery sales rise in December

Lottery sales were up 16.3 per cent in year-on-year terms.

US.- Iowa Lottery sales reached $51.1m in December. That’s an increase of 16.3 per cent in year-on-year terms and 35.1 per cent compared to November.

The growth was primarily driven by a rise in Powerball sales, which increased by 225.6 per cent sequentially and of 416.5 per cent in year-on-year terms to $16.3m. Scratch tickets led the market share with sales of $26.3m, a decrease of 2.2 per cent from December 2024 but an increase of 15.3 per cent sequentially.

For the first six months of the 2025 fiscal year, the lottery generated $243.6m in operating revenues, a 12.2 per cent increase compared to the $217.1m reported in the first half of the previous fiscal year.

Operating income for December 2025 was $10.6m, up 21.8 per cent from December 2024. Operating expenses rose from $35.3m in December 2024 to $40.5m, mainly due to higher prize payouts associated with the increased volume of Powerball sales.

Proceeds to state causes for the month totalled $10.6m. For the year-to-date, state proceeds were $51.9m, compared to $41.8m during the same period in the prior year.
