Holland Casino Online licence renewed for five years
The state-controlled casino operator will continue to operate online gambling in the Netherlands until at least 2031.
The Netherlands.- The Dutch gambling regulator Kansspelautoriteit (KSA) has confirmed that Holland Casino Online will retain its licence to operate in the Netherlands’ online gambling market for another five years. The extension, announced today (August 6) takes effect on October 1, 2026, the five-year anniversary of the launch of regulated online gambling in the country.
The five-year renewal means the state-owned operator, which also has a chain of land-based casinos, can continue offering online gambling until at least 2031.
Holland Casino chief executive Petra de Ruiter welcomed the decision, stating: “We will continue to commit to a safe and responsible online offering in which player protection always comes first. At the same time, it remains essential that the regulated market is attractive enough to keep players away from unregulated providers, which lack supervision and protection.”
While Holland Casino benefits from its omnichannel presence, it’s been a strong critic of the rise in gambling tax in the Netherlands, which was increased to 34.2 per cent of gross gaming revenue in January 2025 and then to 37.8 per cent in January this year. The operator has repeatedly warned that the higher levy will erode profitability. The KSA has also raised concerns about the tax hike, noting that tax revenue actually fell after it was introduced.
The Ministry of Finance, however, has projected that the tax changes will generate an extra €200m annually between 2025 and 2028. The government has pledged to work with Holland Casino on mitigating the impact of the tax rise, following last year’s decision not to privatise the operator.
