Goa’s opposition party wants casinos banned

The Goa Congress party has urged the ruling coalition to remember their promise to shut down casinos in the state.

India.- State opposition party Goa Congress has urged the ruling coalition to remember their “forgotten promise” about a casino ban in Goa. Party president Girish Chodankar quoted a Law Commission’s report that speaks of a ban on unlawful betting and gambling and took a shot at the government ahead of India’s legislative elections.

“The Law Commission of India’s report titled ‘Legal Framework: Gambling and Sports Betting including in Cricket in India’ to the government on July 2018 recommended that legalising betting and gambling in India in the present scenario is not desirable and that a complete ban on unlawful betting and gambling must be ensued,” Chodankar stated, citing the Minister of State for Law and Justice PP Chaudhary.

The opposition leader criticised the ruling coalition (led by the Bharatiya Janata Party) for not fulfiling a promise made in 2012, during the State legislative assembly election campaign, about freeing Goa from casinos culture.

“If the government is willing to ban casinos, we (the party) will submit the Law Commission’s report to it. Let the government examine the report and ban the casinos,” he added.
