Gamstop surpasses half a million UK registrations
The self-exclusion programme saw record sign ups in 2024.
UK.- The Gamstop gambling self-exclusion programme saw 99,186 new registrations in 2024. That’s a new record for the programme. Total registrations from 2018 to the end of 2024 reached 532,484 – 0.78 per cent of the UK population. Some 466,726 remained excluded.
The largest proportion of Gamstop users opted for the longest available self-exclusion period, with 45 per cent selecting the five-year option. Some 24 per cent choose one-year and 31 per cent six months. The service is most used by those aged 25 to 34, who represent 36 per cent of all sign-ups.
In terms of geographic distribution, Hull’s HU postcode recorded the highest registration rate at 1.36, followed by Teesside and Sunderland. The report also noted that 8 per cent of Gamstop users had accessed illegal gambling platforms, with the 25-34 age group showing the highest likelihood of doing so.
Meawhile, the Multi-Operator Self Exclusion Scheme for Betting Shops has seen 5,890 new registrations taking the total to 9,531. Around 6,000 betting shops are enrolled in the scheme.
Fiona Palmer, CEO of Gamstop, said the had “been focused on consolidation, strategic planning, and preparing for a new era in gambling harm prevention and treatment in the UK.”
Gamstop also announced the departure of Jenny Watson as chair. She said: “We have achieved substantial progress in protecting individuals from the harm associated with gambling addiction, changing countless lives for the better. The stories of recovery and transformation are a testament to our mission. I am confident that Gamstop is well-positioned to continue making gambling safer for all.”
