Gambling Commission responds to GSGB review
The regulator says over 5,000 people have already accessed stats from the Gambling Survey for Great Britain.
UK.- The Gambling Commission has published its response to the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) following its review of the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB). The response outlines the work it’s completed and actions planned in response to the review’s nine recommendations, including a timeline for delivery.
The regulator also reflects on how GSGB statistics are being used by stakeholders. Nearly 12 months after the first annual report was released. It says the GSGB hub has already been visited by more than 5,000 users.
It noted that the GSGB team has continued to publish outputs from the statistics, including a series of supplementary tables and two deep dive reports. So far, it has highlighted data suggesting that players are skeptical about operator’s responsible gambling measures and also that money is not the main reason for gambling.
The raw data was published in the UK Data Service in February 2025 and in the first month was downloaded by nearly 50 users. it has also been included in several externally published studies.
The OSR recommended that the Gambling Commission provide more detailed information on quality assurance and validation processes and that it clearly communicate potential biases that could affect estimates provided. It also proposed the creation of a user engagement strategy, which would set out how users can take part in the development of the survey, and it suggested the regulator collaborate more with other producers of official statistics.
“The Commission welcomes the OSR’s recognition of the progress made in developing the GSGB and its value in tracking gambling behaviours across Great Britain. Work is already underway to implement the recommendations, many of which will be reflected in the second annual report due in October 2025,” the regulator said.
