Gambling advertising in Kenya gets high court’s support

The outdoor gambling advertising ban in Kenya has been ruled unconstitutional by a high court in Nairobi last Tuesday.

Kenya.- The National Betting and Licensing Board (NBLB) in Kenya decided to ban outdoor betting adverts. However, a high court in Nairobi has ruled against it, deeming the decision as unconstitutional.

According to the court, the gambling advertising ban in Kenya shouldn’t be allowed and termed it null and void. Judge John Mativo of Milimani Law Courts revoked the directive last Tuesday.

The NBLB had also banned celebrities from endorsing online bookies, but Mativo noted regulations weren’t anchored on law.

“We wish to remind you that gaming has a potential to harm the consumer with a possibility of leading to addiction as well as some disorder. We therefore as a regulator of the industry has a duty to protect its customer, members of the public, the young and vulnerable,” the board Director Liti Wambua said.
