Federal hearing on sports betting takes place today
A House Judiciary subcommittee is scheduled to examine whether federal guidelines are needed.
US.- The hearing titled “An Examination of Sports Betting in America” will take place today in Washington D.C., where a House Judiciary subcommittee will examine whether federal sports betting guidelines are necessary in the country, or if each state should have the freedom to regulate the segment.
Chairman of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security and Investigation, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, said last week that they will look at the implications of the legalisation of sports betting on a federal level and discuss what it means for the integrity of sports as well as what sorts of improper or illicit activities could arise. Sensenbrenner also said that they want to determine whether or not a basic federal framework would be effective to guide states’ new gambling policies.
The hearing takes place a few weeks after a Senate Minority Leader released a statement urging federal sports betting guidelines. Sports leagues, such as the NGA, PGA Tour and MLB said that they were in favor of consistency, therefore they supported the legislative framework outlined by Senator Schumer.
On the other hand, the American Gaming Association (AGA), which promoted responsible gaming and the protection of game integrity, among other things, has reiterated multiple times that a federal framework was an abject failure for 26 years, only contributing toa thriving illegal market with no consumer protections and safeguards.
