East Windsor casino takes shape

The tribes behind the proposal said they plan a fall groundbreaking for the future casino.

US.- The Mashantucket Pequot and the Mohegan tribes announced that they plan a fall groundbreaking at their planned casino in East Windsor, Connecticut. The casino, that will be located near the MGM Springfield in Massachusetts, will also compete with the one proposed by MGM to be located in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

East Windsor still needs to grant a formal application for a building permit at the site where the tribes plan to build the casino. The casino will be a US$300-400 million project, to feature 100,000 square feet of gaming and entertainment space.

The tribes insist that MGM Springfield alone could cost the state more than 9,000 casino jobs, as well as US$100 million in state tax revenue. The tribes behind the Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun said that the East Windsor casino would create approximately 4,300 jobs both directly and indirectly, and would employ 650 Hartford residents.

While the tribes are confident that they will announce a name and logo in the near future, the project is stuck in federal courts as MGM Resorts International challenged the East Windsor casino. So far, the U.S. Department of the Interior has given permission for the East Windsor casino on the national register for Mohegan, but the Pequots are still waiting for the approval. In order to proceed with the project, both tribes need to be on the Federal Register.
