California launches largest US lottery prize to promote vaccination
The “Vax for the Win” campaign launched by the California government will offer $116m over several draws to promote vaccination in the state.
US.- After the announcement of the Colorado Lottery, California will also follow the Ohio initiative to encourage vaccination through a lottery among residents who have received at least one shot.
The authorities of many US states are pushing the vaccination programme through different incentives, but it seems lotteries are considered the most effective.
While Ohio and then Colorado have offered $5m for winners, California has committed $116.5m in prize money.
Governor Gavin Newsom said Vax for the Win currently offers the largest jackpot of all states that have employed such a programme
The website reads: “It’s our biggest ‘thank you’ yet to Californians who have received their COVID-19 vaccine”.
Eligibility for the California Lottery
According to the official statement, residents of California aged 12 and older and who have received at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine are eligible for the lottery.
Ten winners will be chosen on June 15 to each receive a $1.5m jackpot. Another 30 residents will be selected to win a $50,000 cash prize, with 15 residents chosen on Friday, June 4, and another 15 winners on Friday, June 11.
