British Gambling Commission names Sue Young as executive director of operations
Young joins the British gambling regulator from HMRC at a crucial time for the sector.
UK.- The British Gambling Commission has appointed Sue Young as its new executive director of operations. It said she will lead a number of the regulator’s operational functions, without going into details.
Young joins the regulator from HMRC where she was director of Debt Management. The Gambling Commission highlighted her leadership experience from across the public sector, noting that she has held senior roles at the Home Office, including Border Force and HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services and the Department of Health and Social Care.
Her appointment comes after the announcement of plans to increase the Gambling Commission’s fees. The regulator is currently seeking a new CEO. It’s also yet to appoint a new chair a year after Marcus Boyle stepped down from the role.
Sarah Gardner, the Gambling Commission’s acting chief executive following the departure of Andrew Rhodes, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Sue to the Gambling Commission. There is a great deal of important work underway across our operational teams, not least our continued focus on tackling the illegal market and delivering strong regulatory outcomes. Sue brings a wealth of operational leadership experience and I’m very much looking forward to working with her.”
Young said: “I’m excited to be joining the Gambling Commission and to be learning about a new sector. The Commission plays an important role in protecting consumers and ensuring gambling is conducted fairly and safely. I’m looking forward to building on the significant work already underway across the organisation.”
Sky News has suggested that Rhodes is considering taking up a role at Hawkbridge, a gambling-focused strategic advisory firm announced last month by the gambling law firm Harris Hagan. Media have suggested that such a move could cause controversy amid concerns over conflicts of interest.
