Queensland to vote on casino project

Citizens of Queensland’s city of Cairns would participate at a public consultation on casino development.

Australia.- The government of Queensland State announced a public consultation in Cairns city to determine whether to approve or reject a mega touristic project that includes a casino. The announcement was made this week, noting citizens that they will be able to decide if the casino and resort development would take place.

The mega project would be installed at the Cairns City Port precinct and would include several entertainment centers to boost the tourism industry, as revealed this week by Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones. Local legislators would only be able to debate the approval of the project if it obtains the greenlight by citizens.

“We’ve seen the benefits of the $3 billion Queen’s Wharf Brisbane project and a global tourism hub in Cairns would deliver much needed tourism infrastructure for North Queensland,” she said. “A global tourism hub in Cairns, if chosen, would integrate with the state’s project to expand the Cairns Convention Centre.”

Meanwhile, the Australia Institute report on gambling industry in the country has spread concern over authorities, as it positions the market as a “global anomaly” due to players consumption of poker machines. The report pays special attention on players’ gaming activities with slot machines installed at pubs and clubs.
