Sydney’s Wentworth Park to host final greyhound meeting
Greyhound Racing NSW has confirmed that Wentworth Park will stage its last race meeting in October.
Australia.- Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has confirmed that Wentworth Park will see its last race on October 16. The event will end 94 years of competition at the iconic Sydney venue following an agreement between the Greyhound Breeders, Owners and Trainers Association (GBOTA) and the New South Wales Government for an early closure.
The final meeting will feature the Ladbrokes Million Dollar Chase, billed as the world’s richest greyhound race. GRNSW expects the event to draw unprecedented attendance.
The announcement follows media speculation linking an early departure to concerns over animal welfare and the long-term viability of greyhound racing. GRNSW rejected those claims, arguing that welfare standards have improved significantly.
“Just as we did when we left Dapto before the end of that lease last year, we felt it was appropriate and necessary that Wentworth Park be given the fitting farewell it deserved,” GRNSW CEO Steve Griffin said. “It just wouldn’t have been right to allow the venue to peter out with the end of the lease. This way we will make it the biggest night to remember for all in our sport, and all those who want to come along and reminisce.”
“Our welfare is the best it has ever been with serious injury rates plummeting and on-track deaths at an all-time low,” he added. “This move is not, as some have suggested, the beginning of the end for the sport. In fact, this is the start of a new era for greyhound racing in NSW.”
Greyhound racing began at Wentworth Park in 1932. The venue became Sydney’s sole city greyhound venue in 1987 following the closure of Harold Park. GRNSW was informed by Racing minister David Harris in December 2025 that the lease would not be extended beyond September 2027.
Metropolitan racing will move to Gosford from October 17, with Saturday night meetings scheduled there until September 2027. After that, racing will temporarily relocate to Richmond while work continues on the planned Sydney Metropolitan Racing Precinct. GRNSW said it is currently evaluating potential locations for the replacement facility and expects to announce details before the end of the year.
