Vietnam.- An illegal online gambling ring has been raided by police with 21 people arrested while the country remains on lockdown due to Covid-19.

The police investigation found the illegal gambling organisation had generated revenues of VND20 trillion (US$858.3million).

Among those arrested was 28-year-old Nguyen Thi Huong Ly, considered to be the ring-leader, and 24-year-old Nguyen Duc Manh.

They were charged with offering online gambling games such as poker via servers based overseas.

Vietnam, a nation that describes gambling as “social evil,” has taken steps to legalise and regulate online gambling, including permitting sports betting back in 2017.

It has also been running a trial to allow people aged over 21 with a monthly income of at least VND10 million (US$432) to play in a casino on the southern Phu Quoc Island.

All other forms of gambling remain illegal.
