Three Indonesians fined in Malaysia over illegal online gambling

The arrests followed a police raid on a city apartment.

Malaysia.- Three Indonesian nationals have been fined MYR10,000 (US$2,350) each by a Magistrates’ Court in Kuching, Malaysia, after pleading guilty to operating illegal online gambling from a residential apartment. The men face six months in prison if the fines are not paid.

Florianus Jeky Chen, 25, Shu Chian, 22, and Asrul, 21, were arrested during a police raid under the ongoing Op Dadu anti-gambling operation. Authorities discovered desktop computers and smartphones at an apartment on Jalan Penrissen that were later confirmed by forensic experts to have been used for illegal gambling.

The men were charged under Section 4B(a) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953. In a related ruling at the Sessions Court, Florianus and Asrul were each sentenced to three months’ imprisonment and one stroke of the cane for entering Malaysia illegally. None of the accused were represented by legal counsel.
