Taiwan police bust alleged World Cup betting ring

Police say the syndicate handled nearly NT$10bn (US$313m) in bets.

Taiwan.- Taiwanese police claim to have dismantled an illegal online betting syndicate that allegedly processed nearly NT$10bn (US$313m) in wagers on FIFA World Cup matches. A raid was conducted at a five-storey property in the southern city of Tainan yesterday, where officers arrested eight suspects and seized computers, mobile phones, cash and betting records.

According to the Tainan City Police Department’s Fourth Precinct, the property had been leased for the duration of the World Cup and served as the syndicate’s operational base. Among those arrested were five people from Hong Kong and Macao who had entered Taiwan on tourist visas.

Authorities said an investigation is ongoing in a bid to identify additional suspects and examine financial transactions.
