Syria restricts access to betting sites as authorities launch review
The government has restricted access to several gambling platforms and requested the removal of betting advertisements from social media while authorities review potential violations of national laws.
Syria.- Syria’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has blocked access to several online gambling and betting websites following complaints about platforms targeting local users. The ministry said access to the affected websites has been suspended while a specialised committee investigates their operations and determines whether they are in violation of national laws.
The government has also asked social media companies to remove advertisements promoting betting services to users in Syria, saying that such marketing increases exposure to activities considered illegal under the country’s legislation. The ministry said the measures are intended to protect citizens from financial exploitation and reduce social harms.
Authorities noted that the online nature of gambling platforms makes them more difficult to monitor than traditional betting activities, as users can access websites and mobile applications privately from their phones or computers.
The blocked websites will remain inaccessible until the government committee completes its review. Syrian authorities indicated that further measures could be introduced as they continue to monitor digital activities and strengthen the country’s regulatory framework for online services.
