Success Universe refinances Ponte 16 debt
Ponte 16 is repositioning its business around hospitality, leisure, entertainment and cultural tourism following the closure of its satellite casino in November 2025.
Macau.- Hong Kong-based investment company Success Universe Group has agreed to refinance loan facilities linked to Ponte 16 in Macau until June 23, 2027, as the property continues its transition following the closure of its satellite casino. The agreement is part of a financial assistance deal involving Pier 16 – Property Development Limited, which owns the Ponte 16 development. Success Universe has a 49 per cent stake in the company, while SJM Resorts owns 51 per cent.
Under the revised arrangement, the facilities will comprise HK$90m (US$11.5m) and MOP273m (US$33.8m). Pier 16 repaid MOP100m (US$12.4m) of the MOP273m (US$33.8m) facility in September, reducing the outstanding amount to MOP173m (US$21.4m).
Success Universe will provide a new guarantee covering its share of the borrowings. Its maximum exposure under the new arrangement is estimated at about HK$139m (US$17.7m), while its shareholder loan to Pier 16 stands at roughly HK$342m (US$43.7m), taking its potential aggregate financial assistance to about HK$481m (US$61.5m). The new arrangement extends the debt beyond its June 2026 maturity, allowing Pier 16 more time to manage Ponte 16 as a non-casino property.
Ponte 16’s satellite casino closed in November 2025 following Macau’s move to end satellite casino operations and SJM’s decision not to take full ownership of the venue. Success Universe reported a HK$20.6m (US$2.6m) share of losses from the associate in the first half of 2026, compared with a HK$48.5m (US$6.2m) share of profit a year earlier.
Success Universe said the decision to continue supporting Ponte 16 is based on growth in Macau’s tourism market. Visitor arrivals rose 9 per cent year-on-year to almost 21 million in the first half of 2026, while spending on non-gaming activities increased 17.4 per cent to MOP44.5bn (US$5.5bn).
Ponte 16 is now targeting the mass-market segment by developing its leisure and entertainment offering around live events, international dining and Macau’s cultural heritage. Following the casino closure, the property has converted parts of its former gaming-related spaces for other uses and introduced cultural events aimed at increasing visitor engagement. Its Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 recorded average occupancy of 80 per cent in the first half of 2026, compared with 86 per cent in the same period last year.
