Osaka wants more operators to apply for its IR project

Osaka has made changes to its IR implementation policy to allow more operators to apply.

Japan.- Osaka has announced changes to its IR implementation policy to allow more operators to take part in the request for proposal (RFP) process

The window for applications has been extended until March, with final proposals due in July.

A partnership between MGM Resorts International and ORIX was the only firm participant to date.

Wynn Resorts, Las Vegas Sands, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, Genting Singapore and Galaxy Entertainment Group have previously shown interest in Osaka and could use the extended RFP period to enter the process.

Japan’s IR Implementation Act includes a strict policy of requirements for IRs, which much include a casino, a large hotel and exhibition facilities which should cover at least 20,000 square metres.

Osaka’s revised implementation policy allows, for a “preparation in stages” approach for the first time.

Last week, authorities dropped the target opening date for the proposed integrated resort on the artificial island of Yumeshima.
