Australia.- The New South Wales (NSW) government has committed an additional AU$10m (US$6.5m) to its Greyhound Capital Grants Program as the industry transitions away from Wentworth Park. The latest commitment brings the additional funding allocated to the transition to AU$20m.

The funding forms part of the government’s response to the Drake Inquiry, which called for revised track standards and stronger measures to protect racing greyhounds. The aim is to ensure greyhound racing venues meet minimum track standards focused on animal welfare and safety.

The announcement coincides with the first race meeting at the newly rebuilt Lithgow track. Work on the venue began in January and included a complete track reconstruction, widening of the racing surface and installation of a wider lure designed to prevent greyhounds from bunching during races.

David Harris, Gaming and Racing minister, said: “We’ve committed this extra funding to ensure the welfare of greyhounds remains a top priority as greyhound racing transitions from Wentworth Park. The NSW Government will continue to support a competitive, responsible and sustainable greyhound racing industry, with the highest standards of animal welfare and integrity.”

Wentworth Park hosted its final greyhound meeting on October 16, ending 94 years of racing at the Sydney venue. The farewell event attracted more than 6,000 spectators and generated AU$9.37m (US$6.1m) in wagering turnover across 10 races, according to Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW).

The Richmond Club site in Western Sydney has been selected as the preferred location for the new Sydney Metropolitan Racing Precinct, which is expected to replace Wentworth Park as the sport’s metropolitan hub. The proposed multi-purpose development includes three racing tracks, training facilities, a veterinary practice and a 24-hour attended boarding kennel. GRNSW expects to confirm its preferred development option in early 2027, with construction scheduled to begin in late 2027.
