The multi-purpose development will combine three racing tracks with community facilities and commercial ventures.

Key takeaways:

  • Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has selected the Richmond Club site in Western Sydney for its new Sydney Metropolitan Racing Precinct.
  • The selection followed an assessment of 12 potential sites with assistance from Deloitte Australia.
  • Plans include three new racing tracks, training facilities, a veterinary practice and a 24-hour attended boarding kennel.
  • GRNSW expects to confirm its preferred development option in early 2027, with construction scheduled to begin in late 2027.

Australia.- Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has selected the existing Richmond Club site in Western Sydney as the preferred location for the new Sydney Metropolitan Racing Precinct (SMRP). The venue would replace Wentworth Park following its final race meeting on October 16.

The decision follows an assessment of 12 potential sites across Western Sydney, conducted with the assistance of Deloitte Australia. GRNSW said the Richmond location offered the best option after considering accessibility for industry participants, planning requirements and costs. Key industry stakeholders, including the Greyhound Clubs NSW (GCNSW) and the NSW Greyhound Owner Trainers & Breeders Association (GBOTA), were consulted as part of the site assessment process.

The plan is for a multi-purpose facility built either on the existing Richmond Club footprint or expanded footprint with the aim to ensure wider community use and revenue streams from outside of racing. The proposals being considered include the building of three new tracks, new club facilities under a joint venture arrangement, 24/7 attended boarding kennel and training facilities in addition to a veterinary practice. The proposals also contemplate a joint venture for the construction of Motel Accommodation on site. GRNSW is considering moving industry administration to the precinct once constructed.

CEO Steve Griffin said: “The new Sydney Metropolitan Racing Precinct, once constructed, will also secure the industry’s financial future with revenue coming into the sport from greater use of the facility.” He added that ownership of the Richmond site would provide greater long-term security for the industry.

The organisation expects to announce which development option it will pursue in early 2027, with construction scheduled to begin in late 2027.
