Macau.- The Macau Polytechnic University (MPU) has published the 11th issue of its twice yearly Global Gaming & Tourism Research.

In the field of gaming research, professor Zeng Zhonglu from the Asia Pacific Gaming Association for Gaming Studies and Professor Yuan Zheng from Sun Yat-sen University have co-authored Gambling Participation Among the Elderly: Current Status, Trends and Policies. Their study explores the trends, motivations, and impacts of elderly gambling participation amid global population aging.

Professor Li Bingqin from the University of New South Wales in Australia authored Challenges and Future of Responsible Gambling Policy in Australia: Regulation, Enforcement, and Protection of High-Risk Groups, analysing responsible gambling policies in Australia.

The chairman of the Macau Regional Economic Research Association, Dr. Yu Wai Hang, and Wei Binyu authored Research on the Impact of Macau’s Gaming Industry on the Regional Economy and the Exploration of its Sustainable Development Path, analysing data from 2012 to 2022. They find a positive relationship between gaming revenue and sustainable development, particularly in the years before the Covid-19 pandemic.

To assess sustainability, the researchers used an index incorporating metrics such as gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, labour force participation, foreign direct investment (FDI), air quality, recycling rates, noise complaints, higher education enrolment, hospital bed usage and population growth.

The study recommends that the government establish green operational guidelines for gaming operators, including carbon reduction targets. The authors also urge gaming operators to invest more in training for employees.
