Japan: six arrested for illegal gambling

Police raided an illegal casino in Tokyo and arrested the manager, staff and two customers.

Japan.- Six people were arrested in Tokyo after police raided an illegal casino.

According to local news, police found people gambling on baccarat at a multi-tenancy building in Tokyo’s Kabukicho entertainment district.

The manager and staff were arrested for allegedly trying to profit from illegal casino operations. Two male customers were also among those arrested.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department said that the casino had been in operation since January with monthly sales of around JPY7 million (US$66,500).

The casino continued working despite the imposition of a state of emergency due to the Covid-19 pandemic early this year. The manager only imposed the use of sanitizer and masks, authorities said.

The six people arrested have admitted the charges.
