Indonesia extends shutdown order on bank accounts linked to online gambling
Banks must use national ID data to identify additional accounts linked to people involved in illegal betting.
Key takeaways:
- Indonesia’s OJK has ordered banks to conduct Enhanced Due Diligence or block 38,796 accounts linked to online igaming.
- Banks must use customers’ national identity numbers to identify additional accounts held by flagged individuals.
Indonesia.- The Indonesian Financial Services Authority has ordered banks to use national identity numbers to identify and block accounts connected to people flagged for suspected connection to illegal gambling. The move is intended to take blocking beyond specific accounts identified by authorities.
Banks must now cross-reference customer data using national identity numbers (NIKs) to identify and shut every additional account owned by flagged individuals. This measure aims to prevent perpetrators from simply shifting illegal funds to alternate accounts within the same or different banking institutions.
Speaking during a monthly board press conference, Dian Ediana Rae, Chief Executive of Banking Supervision at the OJK, announced that regulators have directed financial institutions to carry out Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) or block approximately 38,796 suspicious accounts. This is an increase from the 38,370 accounts cited in previous updates provided by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs.
Authorities are targeting persistent loopholes, such as the buying and selling of bank accounts as well as detecting transaction anomalies like high volumes of small-value transfers. Indonesia’s Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) recorded IDR86.82tn ($5.17bn) in online igaming turnover across more than 467 million transactions in the first half of 2026.
