India: another state seeks to ban online gambling

Tamil Nadu aims to amend current legislation to outlaw online games involving money.

India.- The crusade against online gambling continues in India, as the Tamil Nadu state government considers a total ban on online gambling websites.

Andhra Pradesh made such a decision in September. It recently blocked access to 132 gaming websites and apps.

Now Tamil Nadu is considering amending current legislation to make it a punishable offence to offer online games involving money.

Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami said on social media that the government will soon pass new gambling legislation.

He said: “The Tamil Nadu government taking a note of the situation has decided to swiftly pass legislation for arresting people running the apps and those playing the gambling games that involve betting money.”

All India Radio has reported that the ban could include online rummy.

In India, gambling legislation is decided by each state. Some jurisdictions, including Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Odisha, have already banned real money card games,
