Gujarat police raid alleged gambling venue in Ahmedabad
Police made around 180 detentions and seized cash, vehicles and other valuables during the operation.
India.- Police in India’s Gujarat state have reportedly detained about 180 people following a major raid on an alleged gambling venue in Ahmedabad. The State Monitoring Cell (SMC) launched the operation at Manpasand Gymkhana in the Dariyapur area on August 2, after receiving information that illegal gambling was taking place at a premises that had previously been targeted by law enforcement.
Officers remained on the scene for several hours, questioning those detained before registering cases under the Prevention of Gambling Act. Investigators said they recovered cash, mobile phones, gambling chips, vehicles and other valuables worth several lakh rupees. Initial findings indicate gambling activities were being conducted on multiple tables spread across the building, police said.
Due to the large number of detainees, some were expected to be taken to police stations outside Dariyapur. Senior SMC officials, including Superintendent of Police Mayur Chavda and Deputy Inspector General Vishal Vaghela, supervised the investigation.
In 2021, police arrested 183 people at the same venue, while a separate Crime Branch operation in 2023 led to the arrest of the club’s owner and 26 others. Reports suggest local policing around the establishment could come under review as the investigation progresses.
