70 arrested in raid on illegal casino in Bangkok

Police shut down a venue in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district.

Thailand.- Police have arrested over 70 people in a high-profile raid on an illegal casino in Bangkok’s Sai Mai district. Acting on orders from deputy prime minister and interior minister Phumtham Wechayachai, officers from the Department of Provincial Administration (DoPA) raided a venue behind commercial shop frontsthe 300 metres from a skytrain station in Soi Phahonyothin 52.

Witnesses said dozens of gamblers tried to hide betting chips and flee. Officers say a large central hall equipped had betting stations, computers for online gambling and tables for games like hi-lo. A safe and over THB 800,000 (US$ 24,000) was seized.

The illegal operation was reportedly run around the clock by Thai and Cambodian nationals. The venue also offered food and a phone deposit system. Police said this was the first major operation under a new directive and warned that more actions will follow.
