Canada.- Alberta’s regulated online gambling market generated C$122.1m in non-adjusted gross gaming revenue during its first 80 days, according to figures released by the Alberta iGaming Corporation (AiGC) on Friday. Revenue reached C$56.6m in September, up from C$43.3m in August and C$22.2m in July (the market launched on July 13).

Online casinos accounted for C$42.8m, or 75.6 per cent, of September revenue. Sports betting generated C$11m, representing 19.5 per cent of the total, while live casino contributed C$2.8m. This was the first time a breakdown by vertical was published. The province recorded 388,585 active player accounts, with average revenue of C$146 per account.

The AiGC said the figures reflect the gradual entry of operators and do not yet represent the full market. The market launched with 15 operators, which had increased to 24 by September 30. AiGC CEO Dan Keene said the results suggest that players value the oversight provided by a regulated market while adding that the corporation would continue educating and encouraging people to use regulated platforms.

Alberta followed Ontario to become the second Canadian province to introduce regulated online gambling with private operators. Under Alberta’s framework, 2 per cent of gross gaming revenue goes to First Nations, while 1 per cent funds social responsibility programmes, including mental health and addiction services and research.
