Zambia’s football fever fuels a thriving igaming market
From the Zambian Super League to the English Premier League, football drives online betting activity, engaging millions of fans across the country.
Zambia.- Football is more than Zambia’s favourite sport; it is the engine behind the country’s thriving gambling industry. From local pitches to international arenas, the game fuels the biggest wagers and shapes the habits of millions of bettors nationwide.
According to the Zambia 6Wresearch igaming Market Report, sports betting accounts for the largest share of online gambling in the country.
The report states: “In Zambia, 6.51 million people (31.2 per cent of the total population) are active online, and mobile platforms are at the heart of igaming. Operator-developed apps allow users to easily place bets, view live scores and manage their accounts.”
Breaking down igaming types, sports betting dominates with 60 per cent of activity, followed by online casinos at 25 per cent, lotteries at 10 per cent and electronic mobile games at 5 per cent.
Football rules Zambia’s online betting scene, with the Zambian Super League and English Premier League drawing the most attention. Fans follow domestic and international fixtures closely, enjoying the thrill of the game as much as the opportunity to win from their wagers. Local football also leaves its mark.
The Zambian Super League generates significant betting activity and reflects community pride. Digital platforms have broadened access, enabling fans in both urban centres and rural areas to turn loyalty into consistent betting volumes.
Operators use football to boost betting
The report states that operators have adapted swiftly to the game’s popularity. Local and international brands such as “Betway, BetPawa and Mojabet” design offerings around football, from match winners to goal scorers, often linking promotions and bonuses to major fixtures.
Mobile money platforms like MTN and Airtel have made betting seamless, further embedding football into everyday digital life.
While football leads, other sports, including NBA basketball, rugby, cricket and boxing, also attract wagers. Demographics play a huge role in influencing preferences as the urban youth gravitate towards online betting, while older and rural players often opt for lotteries.
In Zambia, football is more than a game; it drives an entire betting culture, connecting fans, communities and digital platforms across the nation.
