Winter drives online gambling boom in South Africa
Temperatures are plunging across the country, driving a national surge in digital betting as residents swap cold streets for virtual casinos.
South Africa.- As icy winds grip South Africa, a different kind of heat is rising online, and it is coming from digital casinos. With temperatures dipping and nights growing longer, more South Africans are turning to online gambling as their stay-at-home pastime of choice.
The trend mirrors last year’s cold season spike. iGaming Business South Africa statistics showed that online gambling rose by 28 per cent during winter 2024, and this year is showing similar momentum, according to the SA Tourism Authority website.
“Platforms like Betway, Hollywoodbets and World Sports Betting report higher user activity in June and July, especially after 6pm, when people settle in for the night. Sports betting, online slots and virtual games now dominate the landscape of the country’s gambling habits,” the website stated.
The bite of winter has led to a marked rise in online betting, particularly in Johannesburg, a popular destination that is also known as the coldest city in South Africa. With temperatures recently dropping to 1°C (33.8°F), the city is seeing a noticeable spike in traffic to digital gambling platforms as cold nights are keeping people indoors and logged on.
Online gambling surges as winter continues
Chilly, dry evenings paired with the easy access of smartphones are driving the latest rise in online betting, according to experts.
The South African Weather Service reports show that winters in the country bring shorter days and longer, colder nights, often encouraging people to spend more time indoors.
This seasonal shift is proving to be a significant and consistent driver of revenue, not just a passing trend for South Africa’s online gambling industry.
With several cold weeks still ahead, South Africa’s online casinos are gearing up for continued growth, proving once again that when the mercury drops, the bets heat up.
