UK jockey Darryll Holland brings expertise to Mauritius horse racing, ignites betting action
Former UK jockey Darryll Holland relocates his training operation to Mauritius, expected to reshape wagering for the 2026 season.
Mauritius.- Mauritius horse racing is poised to become a major focus for betting in 2026 after former UK jockey Darryll Holland announced he is relocating his training academy to the island nation. Holland, who rode nearly 100 winners internationally before turning to training, has secured a licence from the Mauritius Turf Club to compete throughout the upcoming season at the historic Champ de Mars Racecourse.
Holland said: “I am pleased to confirm that I intend to establish Darryll Holland Stables in Mauritius and to play an active role in the continued evolution of horse racing at Champ de Mars – one of the world’s oldest and most iconic racecourses, rich in history, tradition and sporting excellence.”
The announcement was made on March 2 and racing analysts say Holland’s move – bringing international racing experience to a market followed by South African and regional punters – could introduce fresh contenders and deepen wagering opportunities across Mauritius and the Indian Ocean region. Early season races are expected to draw interest from bettors, as the introduction of new stables and high-profile runners could have a noticeable impact on wagering across win/place markets and exotic bets.
Holland reflects on Mauritius
Holland reflected on his past experience in Mauritius. “Mauritius has played a significant and enduring role in my professional journey. Over a total period of approximately seven years, I had the privilege of riding and working on the island,” he said.
The 2026 racing calendar at Champ de Mars has confirmed multiple meetings beginning later this year, including a season start on April 25, 2026, and comes amid increased prize money and preparations for a strengthened season. Betting operators and racing officials note that higher-profile participation can generate increased turnover and engagement from both local and international punters.
Holland also praised his support network. “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the owners who have placed their trust in me throughout my training journey in the United Kingdom, and to the exceptional team of staff whose dedication, skill and quiet commitment make everything possible behind the scenes,” he added.
