Uganda intensifies efforts to take down illegal gambling empire
Uganda’s regulators and police launch fierce crackdown to reclaim the nation’s gaming integrity.
Uganda.- A fierce battle is underway to dismantle Uganda’s sprawling underground illegal gambling industry that has rapidly expanded both online and on the streets.
The National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) has intensified enforcement efforts to shut down unlicensed betting operations.
From offshore websites flooding Ugandans with numerous offers to hidden land-based dens packed with illegal slot machines, the scale of the problem is impossible to ignore.
Now the NLGRB is unleashing a massive crackdown, determined to crush illicit gambling activities that are shaking the foundations of public order.
“The NLGRB was created by Parliament through the Lotteries and Gaming Act, CAP 334. Our main mandate is to supervise and regulate all gaming activities while ensuring citizens are protected from gaming’s harmful effects,” Denis Mudene Ngabirano, CEO of the NLGRB, reportedly said.
In a series of coordinated raids with the Uganda Police Force, authorities have confiscated thousands of illegal slot machines. Over 5,000 were seized in a single massive operation, sending a clear message to underground operators.
Ngabirano added that the regulator has partnered with the police to eliminate small illegal operations as soon as they are discovered, preventing them from expanding.
