Uganda Gambling Board leverages gaming hubs to fight HIV/AIDS
Gambling Board to actively assist in the fight against HIV/AIDS across the country.
Uganda.-Uganda’s National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB) is showing that regulation can do more than oversee gaming; it can save lives. The board is now exploring ways to turn the country’s gaming landscape into a frontline in the fight against HIV/AIDS through a strategic collaboration with the Uganda AIDS Commission (UAC).
This week, the NLGRB hosted senior UAC officials at its newly inaugurated Bugolobi headquarters to formalise the partnership, which aims to mainstream HIV/AIDS awareness through gaming channels.
The session was led by Charles Otai, Monitoring and Evaluation Officer at the UAC. He outlined the commission’s mission of “coordinating Uganda’s HIV/AIDS response through awareness campaigns, stigma reduction, creation of safe spaces and mobilisation of funding for affected communities”.

Uganda faces significant HIV/AIDS challenges, with close to one and a half million people living with the disease. A key focus of the discussions was the concept of mainstreaming HIV/AIDS consciousness across all sectors, with gaming venues frequented by millions poised to become critical touchpoints for public health messaging.
Gaming for prevention
The epidemic remains a major issue in Uganda, with 1.43 million people estimated to be infected and with 17,000 HIV/AIDS-related deaths annually, according to recent UNAIDS figures.
Talks focused on embedding prevention resources into lottery kiosks, betting shops and digital gaming platforms.
The NLGRB said: “The discussion focused on how both parties can work together to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS. Charles Otai shared the role of the commission, its expected results and the benefits of mainstreaming HIV/AIDS awareness across all sectors in Uganda.”
This collaboration is in line with Uganda’s Presidential Fast-Track initiative, launched in 2017, which aims to eradicate HIV/AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. President Yoweri Museveni’s strategy emphasises multi-sector mobilisation.
The NLGRB’s approach demonstrates how regulation, entertainment and social responsibility can intersect for real societal impact.
