Tsogo Sun clinches SA’s Somerset West Casino licence after ten years

After a decade of waiting, Tsogo Sun set to dramatically transform Western Cape gaming scene.

South Africa.- South Africa’s casino giant Tsogo Sun has clinched its Somerset West casino licence after ten years of waiting, marking a major win for the gaming industry and a boost for the thriving city of Cape Town.

The Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board’s approval allows Tsogo Sun to relocate its Caledon casino licence to Somerset West, clearing the way for a world-class casino and hotel that will bring premium gaming, entertainment and hospitality experiences to the Helderberg and Overberg regions.

JSE-listed Tsogo Sun hailed the approval as “a positive development for both the group and the Western Cape”, according to Moneyweb. The planned project is set to transform these underserved areas, create jobs, boost tourism and expand South Africa’s luxury gaming footprint.

Tsogo Sun, already boasting an extensive national presence across the country, has been working aggressively to establish its presence in two of the Western Cape’s most promising tourism zones.

The company said: “Land-based casinos invest substantially in infrastructure and create significant direct and indirect jobs.” The Helderberg and Overberg investments are expected to stimulate local businesses, tourism and employment, further cementing Tsogo Sun’s role as a key driver in South Africa’s gaming industry.

Long road to victory for Tsogo Sun

Tsogo Sun’s established casinos across South Africa pave the way for its new Somerset West property.

The journey to this milestone has been long and challenging. Tsogo Sun had previously accused provincial regulators of delaying its plans to expand into Somerset West, describing the prolonged waiting period as “disappointing”. It said: “Entrenched market dominance by a rival operator had limited competition, restricted consumer choice, and undermined efforts to broaden tourism infrastructure in the province.”

At the time, Tsogo Sun said the licensing delay had broader consequences, describing the deadlock as more than a “business hurdle and a blow to job creation, tourism and local development”.

With the licence now secured, Tsogo Sun is ready to bring its vision to life, offering residents and visitors a fresh, world-class gaming and hospitality destination in South Africa’s Western Cape.
