Trade minister Parks Tau named keynote speaker for ALGA CEOs Forum 2026
Tau’s responsibilities place him directly at the centre of key regulatory and governance decisions affecting South Africa’s lottery sector.
South Africa.- The African Lotteries & Gaming Association (ALGA) has announced South Africa’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Parks Tau, as the keynote speaker at its 2026 CEOs Forum, which will take place in Durban from September 1 to 4.
The forum, themed “The Black Table – Leading Africa with Intention”, will bring together government officials, regulators and industry executives to discuss issues affecting Africa’s lotteries and gaming sector.
Tau’s participation comes with direct relevance to the industry. As trade, industry and competition minister, he is responsible under South Africa’s Lotteries Act for awarding the National Lottery and Sports Pools licence. In May 2025, he awarded the fourth licence to Sizekhaya Holdings following the conclusion of the selection process. The licence took effect on June 1, 2026. He also played a role in arrangements to ensure continuity of lottery operations during the transition from Ithuba, the previous operator, to Sizekhaya.
His role in appointing the National Lotteries Commission’s chairperson further underscores his direct involvement in key decisions shaping South Africa’s lottery industry. After receiving the names of three candidates from Parliament for consideration as NLC chairperson, Tau ultimately selected King Tembinkosi Bonakele for the position in July 2026.
These responsibilities give his participation at the ALGA forum particular relevance as stakeholders consider the future direction of lotteries and gaming in Africa.
Tau is expected to bring a broader economic policy perspective to discussions on investment, regulation, competitiveness, technological advancement and responsible growth across Africa’s lotteries and gaming markets.
ALGA said the forum will also examine how the sector can contribute to wider economic development, including industrial development, transformation, investment and inclusive economic participation.
The association said sustainable development of the sector requires closer engagement between government and industry, with regulation and innovation considered alongside economic opportunities and responsible growth.
The forum will be held at the Zimbali Coastal Resort & Conference Centre in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
