The Gambia launches digital tax system set to modernise gambling payments

GRA and First Bank Gambia team up to streamline tax payments for casinos, sports betting and online gaming operators through a new digital system.

The Gambia.- The Gambia Revenue Authority (GRA) has partnered with First Bank Gambia to modernise revenue collection, introducing a digital system that allows gambling operators, casinos, sports betting companies and other businesses to pay taxes directly through banks.

While the initiative is aimed at improving efficiency across all sectors, it is set to directly influence how gambling operators manage compliance, reporting and financial transparency.

For licensed gambling operators, the move signals new opportunities for efficiency, transparency and growth. The digital system enables faster, more streamlined tax payments, reducing administrative bottlenecks and manual processes.

At the same time, all transactions will now be more easily monitored by the GRA, encouraging operators to enhance their accounting systems and reporting practices to ensure traceability of all revenue streams.

A TechAfrica News report stated: “The collaboration underscores GRA’s commitment to digital innovation, transparency and accountability in revenue management”, highlighting the broader goals behind the initiative.

Gambia modernises gambling taxes

The change comes amid a broader overhaul of gambling taxation in The Gambia. In 2025, the tax on gambling winnings increased from 30 per cent to 40 per cent, applying to profits from betting, gaming, lotteries and other activities, excluding the amount staked. This adjustment, combined with the digital tax system, strengthens transparency and regulatory compliance across the sector.

The initiative marks a major step toward technology-driven financial operations across the country. By modernising tax collection, the GRA aims to improve efficiency across all sectors while strengthening oversight and accountability in gambling.

For operators, this means more predictable and streamlined tax processes, alongside greater clarity and confidence in their financial management.

As the sector adapts, casinos, sports betting platforms and online gaming operators will need to invest in accounting infrastructure, staff training and compliance protocols. Staying proactive with the GRA could help operators navigate this new digital tax environment, reduce risk and maintain smooth operations.

Ultimately, while the GRA’s digital tax initiative introduces new requirements, it also offers gambling operators a chance to align with international best practices and build a more efficient and accountable industry.
