Sun International’s GrandWest casino expansion officially begins construction
Sod-turning ceremony marks the start of construction on the R650m (US$35.7m) development, with city officials officials highlighting its role in supporting investment, employment and tourism growth.
South Africa.- South Africa’s GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World, part of Sun International, has officially begun construction of its R650m (US$35.7m) GrandWest Mall development following a sod-turning ceremony, with city officials saying the project reflects confidence in Cape Town’s economy.
The June 19 ceremony officially marked the start of construction on the 22,000m² GrandWest Mall, which is being developed through a joint venture between Flanagan & Gerard Property Group and GrandWest, a subsidiary of Sun International. Scheduled to open in June 2027, the R650m (US$35.7m) development will integrate seamlessly with South Africa’s premier entertainment precinct, expanding GrandWest’s retail and leisure offering.
Speaking at the event, Cape Town Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth James Vos said the development reflects continued private-sector investment. “The sod-turning ceremony for the R650m GrandWest Mall development reflects confidence in Cape Town’s economy and its growth outlook. Developments like this highlight the role of private sector investment in driving growth, creating jobs and strengthening the retail and commercial economy,” said Vos in a statement issued by Flanagan & Gerard Property Group and GrandWest.
Vos said developments of this scale support the city’s retail sector while contributing to tourism and trade. The precinct already includes a casino, hotel, conference facilities, restaurants and entertainment venues.
Sun International Group CEO Ulrik Bengtsson said the development forms part of the group’s long-term vision for GrandWest. “For Sun International, this investment is about keeping GrandWest relevant, vibrant and responsive to how people live, shop and spend their time today. It extends the GrandWest precinct, bringing retail, dining, entertainment and leisure together in a more connected and convenient way,” said Bengtsson.
Construction gathers momentum
Construction is already underway following the transfer of land into the joint venture earlier this year. Western Cape-based Isipani Construction has been appointed as the main contractor after a competitive procurement process, with preliminary works completed and the site established for construction, which commenced in May 2026.
Developers said local procurement would be a core commitment, with preference given to Western Cape-based subcontractors, materials suppliers and tradespeople throughout the build. The approach is expected to support regional employment and strengthen local supply chains.
The single-level mall has been designed by MDS Architecture and draws inspiration from the Western Cape’s coastline, renowned wine regions and the existing GrandWest entertainment complex. It will connect directly with the existing precinct, where the restaurant and entertainment zone will feature Panarottis, Ocean Basket and RocoMamas.
Flanagan & Gerard Managing Director Paul Gerard said the sod-turning ceremony marked a significant milestone for the project. Gerard added: “Breaking ground on GrandWest Mall is a moment we have worked towards with great commitment and care. The quality of the team assembled – from our joint venture partner and contractor through to our architect and tenants – will deliver a development the Western Cape community will be proud of. We look forward to welcoming shoppers in June 2027.”
GrandWest’s casino, hotel and entertainment facilities will continue operating as normal throughout the construction period.
The development has also secured strong commercial momentum, with more than 70 per cent of the gross lettable area already leased and a further 20 per cent currently under offer.
