SportPesa announces tripled prize money for FKF Premier League
Additional funding can be a lifeline for struggling clubs and players, enabling them to upgrade their training facilities, strengthen their squads and potentially attract foreign talent to boost their performance.
Kenya.- SportPesa, the official sponsor of Kenya’s top-flight football league, the FKF Premier League, has unveiled a huge increase in prize money that could change the game for players and clubs.
The total pot now stands at Ksh 20 million (€131,100) for the top three teams in the 2025/26 season, with the league champion taking home Ksh 15 million (€98,325), a threefold increase from the previous amount of Ksh 5 million (€32,775). The second-place team will earn Ksh 3 million (€19,665), while third place grabs Ksh 2 million (€13,110).
This exciting update comes from a fresh ten-year partnership between SportPesa and the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), valued at Ksh 1.12 billion (€7,341,600). It gives SportPesa exclusive naming rights to the competition, which is now referred to as SportPesa League this season. The partnership is also highlighted by a new logo and branding unveiled by SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri and FKF President Hussein Mohammed.
Karauri shared his excitement about the changes, saying: “We are determined to make the SportPesa League highly competitive. Every player must feel they are striving for something meaningful.” He explained how the prize started at Ksh 6 million but grew after talks with FKF. “Initially, we had allocated six million shillings as prize money, but after consultations with FKF, we agreed to increase it to ten million. Now, with FKF’s commitment, we have doubled the figure for the top three teams.”
Mohammed called the partnership a turning point for the sport in Kenya. He said: “This is a historic moment for our league. In addition to the ten million shillings mentioned, FKF will inject another ten million. The clubs will now have 20 million shillings to be shared among the top three finishers at the end of the season. The champions will get 15 million shillings, three million will go to the second-place team, and two million to the third.”
Mohammed also looked ahead, adding: “This is something we will continue to develop. I believe this league has the potential to earn its champions up to 50 million shillings and beyond, and that is our direction.”
The additional funding can be a lifeline for struggling clubs and players, enabling them to upgrade their training facilities, strengthen their squads and potentially attract foreign talent to boost their performance.
