SA responsible gambling foundation leads educational roadshow for learners in Kwadukuza

The SARGF will use clear presentations, interactive discussions and real-life examples to explain why gambling is illegal for under-18s.

South Africa.- The National Gambling Board (NGB), South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF), Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, National Consumer Commission and KwaZulu-Natal Economic Regulatory Authority have joined forces to launch the Taking Risks Wisely Schools Roadshow in the KwaDukuza area.

The organisations made the joint announcement on February 23, noting that the initiative aims to engage school learners on the legal prohibition of underage gambling and provide them with the knowledge to make safer choices regarding risk-taking activities.

The roadshow runs from Tuesday, February 24, to Friday, February 27, with early morning sessions at schools across KwaDukuza, including Iziphozethu, Tshelenkosi, Mbozamo, Dr B.W. Vilakazi, Mavivane and Mbekamuzii.

The SARGF will lead the sessions, using clear presentations, interactive discussions and real-life examples to explain why gambling is illegal for under-18s, the risks involved and how to respond to peer or online pressure. Participants will also learn about the free, confidential support available to anyone experiencing gambling-related difficulties at home.

Sibongile Simelane-Quntana, SARGF’s Executive Director, has previously highlighted the value of this work for families: “This programme focuses on offering free support to young people who may have been directly impacted by illegal underage gambling or the harmful effects of problem gambling within their homes.”

For parents, teachers and community members in KwaDukuza, the school visits this week provide an opportunity to discuss these risks openly with children who may encounter them through mobile phones or local influences. Although the roadshow concludes on Friday, the partner organisations plan to continue similar educational activities throughout the year in other districts and provinces.
