RGAAF to screen new film about gambling addiction in Lagos
Seun Abimbola, RGAAF Programme Director, says the film is a call to act amid wider efforts to better protect players from gambling harm.
Nigeria.- A new documentary on gambling addiction in Nigeria will screen privately on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at Alliance Française in Lagos. Titled Behind the Bet, the film is produced by the Responsible Gaming Against Addiction Foundation (RGAAF) and follows the story of real Nigerians who have struggled with the consequences of gambling addiction.
Directed by award-winning filmmaker Kemi Adetiba, the documentary includes voices from the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority and the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Yaba. It highlights the importance of responsible gambling practices and showcases tools like self-exclusion features on betting apps.
Seun Abimbola, RGAAF Programme Director, says the film is a call to act: “We hear from families every week about lives changed by betting. This film listens to them and shows operators and regulators how support can stop worse harm.”
The screening will host 150 invited guests, including media, community leaders and betting executives. It will also feature a panel discussion, which will focus on expanding therapy services to support those affected by gambling addiction.
The event will launch RGAAF’s ‘Help One Life’ campaign, which seeks monthly donations of at least N1,000 (€0.55) or $1 (€0.92) to fund recovery sessions in West Africa. Abimbola said: “Each donation pays for one counselling hour. We begin in Nigeria but want networks across the continent.”
