The prosecutor alleges that Point of Sales attendant actions contravene Section 383 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

Nigeria.- A 24-year-old Point of Sale (POS) attendant has been sentenced to 18 months in prison by an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State for stealing N1 million (€557) from his employer to gamble.

According to Inspector E.O. Adaraloye, the prosecutor of the case, the accused, Yusuf Olamilekan, committed the offence at 6 pm on April 7 in Sango-Ota. He alleged that Olamilekan fraudulently withdrew N1 million from Emeka and Jane Company‘s account without consent and squandered it on games of chance.

Adaraloye said that Olamilekan’s actions contravene Section 383 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun State, 2006, which defines and prescribes punishment for the offence of stealing. However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the theft charge.

While delivering her judgement, Magistrate Mrs O.O. Fadairo ruled that the prosecution had successfully proven the defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

The court sentenced Olamilekan to 18 months imprisonment, with an option to pay a fine of N60,000 (€33.43). He was also ordered to make full restitution of N1 million to Emeka and Jane Company.
