NLC inspects lottery retailers across KwaZulu-Natal
The compliance exercise extended beyond retailer checks to include a review of safeguards designed to protect lottery winners.
South Africa.- The National Lotteries Commission (NLC) has completed a week-long compliance drive across KwaZulu-Natal, inspecting licensed lottery retailers and promoting responsible gambling through a public awareness campaign.
In a regulatory compliance update released on Tuesday, August 4, the NLC said its regulatory compliance team carried out inspections between July 27 and 31 in Durban, KwaMashu, Umlazi, Pinetown and Umhlanga to assess whether lottery retailers were complying with their licence conditions.
The inspections also focused on ensuring operators had measures in place to protect participants, including controls to prevent underage participation and excessive play.
As part of the exercise, the team visited the Sizekhaya Regional Office to review its secured winners’ area. The assessment was intended to verify that appropriate safeguards were in place to protect lottery winners and maintain the integrity of the prize-claim process.
Separately, the NLC hosted an Education and Awareness Exhibition at Springfield Value Centre in Durban on July 30, as part of its regulatory mandate to educate the public about the harmful effects of gambling and encourage responsible play.
The exhibition featured interactive engagements aimed at informing participants about the risks associated with excessive gambling, the importance of regulatory compliance and the measures in place to safeguard communities.
The Commission said both the compliance inspections and public awareness initiative formed part of its ongoing regulatory efforts to strengthen consumer protection and uphold integrity across South Africa’s national lottery sector.
